Project Overview
Sydney Metro is Australia’s biggest public transport project. Due for completion in 2024, the AU$50 billion NSW Government priority infrastructure investment project will deliver 31 metro railway stations and more than 66 kilometres of new metro rail spanning four new metro lines. From our initial engagement on the construction of the new Sydney Metro Castle Hill Station and Sydney Yard Access Bridge at Central Station, The Men From Marr’s have subsequently been engaged to deliver bespoke craneage solutions across another four stations on the Sydney Metro City & Southwest line including Barangaroo, Central, Martin Place and Crows Nest.
THE CHALLENGE
Similar projects around the world have adopted the cut-and-cover box method, where crawler cranes are nearly always the immediate consideration but the problem with this more traditional approach is the requirement for costly, challenging and time-consuming groundworks.

OUR SOLUTION
Marr’s approach across multiple stations has consistently demonstrated that installing the right cranes can change the way an entire project is constructed, principally because of the ability to lift fewer, bigger pieces.
THE RESULTS
The benefits of using Marr’s technology – using fewer cranes with greater capacity and reach to deliver less complex, more efficient, and safer ways of constructing – is a game changer for future major infrastructure projects of this scale.
Sydney Metro Castle Hill Station
Working with the Northwest Rapid Transit (NRT) consortium including MTR Corporation, John Holland, CPB Contractors, UGL Rail and Plenary Group – The Men From Marr’s developed a unique solution for the installation, operation and removal of cranes at the new Sydney Metro Castle Hill Station.

Central Station Yard Access Bridge (SYAB)
Construction of the Sydney Yard Access Bridge (SYAB) Project at Central Station was the first early and enabling works package for the Sydney Metro City and Southwest project. Working with Laing O’Rourke, Marr’s delivered a heavy lift solution that helped to secure the construction program whilst working during restricted rail possessions.

Sydney Metro Barangaroo Station
After working with John Holland and CPB Contractors as part of the NRT Consortium on the construction of Castle Hill Station, The Men From Marr’s were engaged by the John Holland CPB Ghella (JHCPBG) joint venture partners during the tender process to develop a craneage solution that would allow them to install heavy pre-cast elements and reduce the construction programme.

Sydney Metro Martin Place Station
Working with John Holland CPB Ghella (JHCPBG) joint venture partners, The Men From Marr’s developed a flexible craneage solution that allowed our client to overcome a number of project constraints and meet a challenging schedule of works whilst working in the heart of Sydney’s CBD.

Sydney Metro Central Station Redevelopment
After working with Laing O’Rourke on the SYAB project, Marr’s were invited to explore how a similar heavy lift craneage solution would be adopted on construction of the new above and below ground works for the Central Station Metro development. The result was a project delivered ahead of schedule.

Sydney Metro Crows Nest Station
Working with construction partner, A W Edwards, Marr’s early engagement on this project has supported Sydney Metro’s desire to design and construct the new Crows Nest station by adopting a designed for manufacture and assembly (DfMA) construction approach.
Using two of Marr’s M2480DHLLs, the bespoke craneage solution addresses the challenge of how to provide the heavy lifting capacity the project needs, within the small space of the station box construction site. The solution also addresses other logistical challenges of the project – including handling large precast elements weighing up to 100 tonnes – all while working adjacent to one of Sydney’s busiest arterial roadways.

Let's talk about how we could add value to your project
We work with our clients to find a solution that works – no matter how big or complex the job is. And if the right crane doesn’t already exist, we’ll build one to suit the needs of your project.
